Dancalan Christian Fellowship

Dancalan Christian Fellowship is one of the missions supported by Shatin Anglican Church.
It was set up by our Church following mission trips there in 2007 and 2008 by Solid Rock (our
church’s youth group).

Dancalan is a fishing village. The people’s livelihood was basically wiped out a few years
ago due to a typhoon then an oil spill. The electrical supply was also interrupted but only the
main ‘street’ had lights anyway. The people live hand to mouth and their food is mainly rice as a
filler with little meat and vegetables. Hence malnourished kids. We have installed solar lighting
which the people really appreciate (it’s good to see that kids can do their homework under the
lights in the village instead of under the lights on the main road outside the village!)

Undesignated donations and our church’s tithe go into General Mission funds which are used
mainly for rice and vitamins for the poorer families and kids, petrol money for the pastor (who
lives somewhere else and has to travel to Dancalan as they don’t have any pastor there yet),
love gifts for the pastor and local ministry workers, i.e. some money to cover their expenses for
the time they give to the ministry but we know that they often give from this money to others
who need it more, and books and Bibles and other expenses to run the ministry.

The Fellowship’s budget was about HK$3,500 per month in 2009 but the monetary needs are so
many it is a daily challenge for the Fellowship’s leaders to decide which need should be met and
which can wait. The ongoing aim of the mission is to help the people to be self sufficient (God
reliant). The Mission Team from our church went to Dancalan in July 2009 to review things with
the locals to find out what the needs are and how we can better help them. The leaders there
continue to do the best with what money is available.

If you are interested to find out more about the work that is going on in Dancalan, the persons to
contact are our church members, John Del Favero and Evelyn Lawas or the Church office.
